Abstract

Human Freedom and Human Rights between Reason and Revelation.
In this article we will discuss the biblical perspective on the relationship between human freedom and human rights. To properly understand his rights, man must consider the limits of freedom. Ignoring the limits of freedom can lead to the infringement of the rights of an individual or a community. Reason is the mechanism that helps us evaluate human freedom and human rights. But reason also has its limits, which if we ignore, we will draw wrong conclusions. From a biblical perspective, human reasoning must take into account the transcendental dimension of human existence: revelation. We argued that reason and revelation are complementary domains of human existence. The knowledge resulting from rational reflection based on the five senses, have to be supplemented with revelation. The first theologian to use logical reasoning in proving the existence of God was Anselm of Canterbury. In this article, we turn to two researchers Baruch Spinoza and Blaise Pascal to understand the possibilities, but also the limits of human reason when interpreting the biblical text. Sometimes human reason does not have the necessary data. That is why Pascal uses two examples from science to try to prove the reality of the Christian religion: prediction in Physics and different orders in Mathematics. Kurt Godel uses Anselm’s reasoning in formulating the Incompleteness Theorem. “In a given system, syntactically correct sentences can be formulated that cannot be verified in that system.” It means that we have to invent a new system to prove certain propositions. Pascal makes us aware that feelings must also be taken into account when we reason. The fear of death forces us to
believe either there is or there is no God. Prayer is considered as a system of thinking of the heart. Prayer raises me to another order of existence.
