Abstract

Coined as a “new” phenomenon, religious terrorism has been characterized as an irrational form of collective violence that challenges national and international security, as well as the viability of the secular state. The purpose of this paper is to define terrorism in general and religious terrorism in particular; to outline historical and contemporary findings; and to propose counterterrorism measures for national and international policymaking.
