Abstract

Christian Perspectives on War.
War remains a taboo subject, rarely discussed in Christian circles. Believers talk about spiritual warfare, but almost never about physical wars. For the past two years, for the people of Ukraine, and therefore also for Christians in this country, war has become a fact of life. It seemed scarcely credible that, not 35 years after the end of the Cold War, another major armed conflict would break out in this part of the world. European states, particularly those that were under the dictatorship of the communist regime, are anxious about Russia’s military aggression, which is not excluded from expanding. How should Christians/the church position themselves in such a complicated life situation? What can we learn from the Bible on this subject? How would we proceed if we find ourselves in such a conflict, as happened to Ukrainian Christians? What if we were Russian Christians? Without claiming to offer answers and solutions to the tragedy of war, we have dared to tackle this subject, so controversial in Christian communities. After a brief biblical foray on the subject, we will present four Christian perspectives on war, as affirmed by four Christian professors of different denominations in Robert G. Clouse, War: Four Christian views. We believe that this approach - a review of Christian perspectives on war - is more conducive to the spiritual and psychological preparation of believers for such situations, rather than the inevitable, unnecessary and often embarrassing eschatological speculations about wars that do break out.
