Abstract

Intolerance in the Name of Tolerance: The Influence of Political Correctness on Ethics and Academic Integrity in American Universities.
This paper presents a case study on the detrimental influence that the ideologies of left-wing radical ideologies in the United States on American academia, specifically focusing on their negative impact on academic ethics and integrity. The paper explores how political correctness, once an ideology embraced by some American students in the  1960s as part of a countercultural movement, has transformed into a form of dictatorship within the American academia. Under the guise of tolerance, it has become intolerant towards those who deviate from its prescribed public discourse. The aim of this exploration is to identify the ways in which ethics and academic integrity in American  colleges and universities are affected by political correctness, and how it has reached its current state. The paper begins by providing a brief history of political correctness, followed by an examination of the reality found within these higher education institutions. Subsequently, it analyzes the case of director Andrei Șerban, widely covered in the  Romanian mass media, who resigned from his position as the head of the School of Theater at Columbia University, after a successful 27-year tenure. This case serves as an illustration of how ideology can undermine the values of ethics, academic integrity, as well as individual cultural and moral values. Furthermore, the paper outlines general  aspects of academic ethics and integrity, highlighting their significance within academia. Drawing from the case study, it identifies the values and principles of ethics and academic integrity that were compromised in this particular situation. In the conclusion, the paper endeavours to explore possible ways to improve the American academic  environment, ensuring that ethics and academic integrity are safeguarded against the encroachment of ideological attacks, specifically those stemming from political correctness.
