Abstract

The evolution of religious education in secularized Europe.
A brief look at the history of Europe reveals its Christian roots. In Gaul, the first Christian communities were formed as early as the 2nd century in Provence and the Rhone Valley, and a bishop is recorded in Lyon in 177 during the persecutions in the area. The Christianization of the rest of Europe took place four or five hundred years later, in the 9th and 10th centuries. For several of these peoples, conversion was the founding event of nationhood: for them as well as for individuals, whose baptism marked their entry into life, so that birth and baptism were confused. Over time, Christianity was a unifying factor throughout the continent. But at the same time, Christianity became a factor of discord: it splintered into rival confessions that fiercely disputed the honor of being the only authentic expression of true Christianity. It is clear that Europe is going through a crisis of values, but it is important to recover its true identity. The process of integrating certain countries into the European Union must not be guided solely by economic and geographical aspects, but must seek to renew the unity of values, which is expressed in the values of law and of life.
