Abstract

Access to Water as a Fundamental Human Right. Affirming Human Rights Freedom in the Context of Global Crises through effective Measures and Policies Promoted by the European Parliament.
After 2008 was declared the “International Year of Sanitation”, “access to water” was officially recognized as a fundamental human right on July 28, 2010, in the United Nations General Assembly. Media coverage of environmental issues and climate change have raised alarm bells on urgent situations and developed a keen sense of responsibility. By  pointing to multiple sources that revolve around the issue of access to water and sanitation, from the political backstage to the academic platforms, an entire world is kept active, informed about the fact that access to clean drinking water is indispensable for a healthy life and dignified, and, is essential for the development of human dignity, social justice, public health and the environment. The European Parliament, through its legislative praxis, reaffirms effective measures and policies that come to the aid of the free expression of human rights in the context of global crises, such as: better policy implementation through more effective funding, accountability and participation, especially among the most marginalized people, engaging states in adopting legal measures so that water does not represent the object financial speculation, supporting the “WASH” and “Resilient Water Accelerator” projects as sustainable and resilient infrastructures, the protection of human rights defenders, the application of international criminal law to  sanction reprehensible social behavior in terms of respect for fundamental human rights, especially in our case, access to water.
