Abstract

The Origins of Human Nature - Foundation for Human Rights.

This article presents the biblical perspective of human origins as a foundation of fundamental human rights. The first part treats the connection between man as a created being and God the creator, the place and role of man in the niverse of  creation, his identity and mission in society as well as his absolute dignity as imago Dei. The second part considers the human nature as presented by the Holy Scripture and transmitted further by Tradition, then the confrontation between  Christian theological thinking and the critique of modern thought regarding the divine origin of human nature and, finally, the new anthropological perspectives in the light of the Second Vatican Council. The third part presents the significance of  the origin of human nature for understanding and respecting fundamental human rights. Finally, the importance of fundamental rights at individual and social levels is presented, going as far as the rights and obligations of peoples and states.  The discrepancy between human rights in public discourse and concrete respect of these rights is also signaled.
