Abstract

Some Models of Political Theologies Throughout the History of the Orthodox Church.
Orthodox theology, in its political dimension, can also be defined as political ecclesiology. It is, in other words, an ecclesiology formulated in political terms. Ecclesiology, in turn, can be viewed as a political theology focused on the Church in her action in the public sphere. It is therefore not surprising that many theologians who have made essential contributions to modern ecclesiology have formulated, either implicitly or explicitly, distinct political theologies, even if they have not claimed their visions as political theology. Both directions of Orthodox theology, political and ecclesiological, converge in the emphasis placed on the importance of the Church. The ecclesiological dimension is a common feature of the various Orthodox political theologies, however different they may be from each other. The interweaving and disentangling of these two dimensions of Orthodox theology throughout the history of the Church is the central concern of this study.
