The Role of Freedom of Conscience in Society.
This article attempts to explain conscience and its freedom using the tools of conceptual history and anthropology. Freedom of conscience, initially understood as being limited exclusively to religious matters, has been extended in today’s constitutional democratic state to increasingly broader areas of human self-expression. This article aims to demonstrate the possibilities and limits of this secularization of freedom of knowledge. Its concern is legal-theoretical. Dogmatic legal explanations serve only as illustrations. Freedom of conscience is essential to a just and prosperous society because it supports individual human dignity and promotes a culture of tolerance and respect. It allows individuals to form their own ethical and moral convictions, enabling personal autonomy and serving as the foundation for other rights, such as freedom of expression and association. A society that protects freedom of conscience promotes honest debate, encourages social contributions, and prevents the excesses of absolute power by fostering a pluralistic and inclusive environment
