Human Trafficking and Prostitution, Serious Violations of Human Dignity and Human Rights. A Comparative Analysis.
Human trafficking and prostitution are two complex phenomena, with major social implications, which violate human rights and human dignity. The comparative analysis of these social problems is essential on the one hand for a better understanding of their complexity, and on the other hand for identifying viable solutions for prevention and control. The purpose of the paper is to explore the similarities and differences between human trafficking and prostitution, to highlight the reasons why these phenomena are often confused and to analyze their consequences on society. While human trafficking is a severe form of organized crime, which aims at the forced exploitation of individuals and has coercion as its central element, prostitution is a consensual activity, although it can be marked by abuse. Regardless of its form, human trafficking is an act of organized crime without borders, which constitutes a serious crime that violates human dignity, affects physical and psychological integrity, and endangers the freedom and security of the individual. Human trafficking and prostitution are two distinct phenomena, yet interconnected through several essential dimensions (sexual exploitation, gender inequality, constant demand for sexual services, etc.). For a correct approach, the major difference between the two phenomena must be understood, namely coercion.
