Abstract

The Martyrial Experience of Conversion: Lipovan Adventists from Jurilovca and Sarichioi.
This paper analyzes the conversion experience of Lipovan Adventists from Jurilovca and Sarichioi, within the broader tension between communal tradition and freedom of conscience. Based on interviews and confessions, the study highlights the mechanisms through which the traditional community reacted to the abandonment of inherited religion, using shame, guilt, and exclusion as instruments of social control. Conversion thus acquired a martyrial dimension, through the acceptance of stigma and suffering in the name of fidelity to Christ. The analysis compares the Lipovan case with classical models of Christian martyrdom (Ignatius of Antioch, Tertullian, Cyprian), underlining the value of nonviolent witness and the transformation of shame into honor. The study also discusses contemporary implications regarding religious freedom, the role of spiritual leaders, and the responsibility of civil authorities in safeguarding human dignity. The particular case thus becomes a symptom of the universal tension between confessional identity and personal freedom of choice, offering a framework for reflection for both Church and society.
