Abstract

An Evaluation of Academic Intellectual Theft in Light of the Ethical Values of the Old Testament.
This paper explores the ethical dimensions of academic intellectual theft through the lens of the Old Testament values, focusing on the commandment „You shall not steal!” (Ex. 20:15). By comparing the Ancient Near Easter legal codes with the Israelite law, the study highlights the unique theological foundation of biblical legislation, grounded in the idea that humans are created in the image of God. The general wording of the biblical commandment allows for its contextual application, including to modern issues such as plagiarism. In academia, plagiarism is not only a legal or institutional violation but also a breach of a moral principle that affirms the right to property, including intellectual creations. The study includes a case from modern Shiite Islam in Iran, where the religious legal framework has adapted to recognize intellectual property, showing that respect for such rights is a cross-cultural necessity. Ultimately, this paper argues that academic integrity requires more than rule-following –it demands personal moral responsibility. Interpreting biblical law in this light affirms its enduring relevance and ethical depth, urging students, educators, and researchers to uphold integrity as both a social and spiritual obligation.
