Abstract

Transhumanism and Technological Soteriology: an Orthodox Theological Re-Evaluation.
This study analyzes the anthropological and soteriological perspectives of contemporary transhumanism, understood as a paradigmatic expression of the secularization of modernity and as an attempt to substitute grace through technology. Transhumanism is analyzed as a form of “artificial soteriology”, a new Promethean mythology that promises to overcome the human condition through scientific progress, biotechnological augmentation and digital transfer of consciousness. The study argues that this “machine salvation” constitutes a re-edition of ancient Gnosticism, in which the body is perceived as an obstacle, and salvation as a liberation of the spirit in a purely informational horizon. By contrast, Orthodox theology reaffirms the theandric character of salvation, based on the incarnation of Christ and man’s participation in the uncreated energies of God. Man is not a technological project, but a person created in the image of God (imago Dei), called not to algorithmic perfection, but to deification by grace (theosis). In this perspective, technology, although it can serve good and progress, becomes dangerous when it arrogates to itself its soteriological function, substituting transcendence for immanence and grace for algorithmic calculation.
