Contextual Ecclesiology and Global Ecclesiology In the Light of Religious Freedom.
The reader of religious textbooks and treatises, even the most recent ones, is justified in wondering why they are written as if the world around them has not experienced any major changes. In general, church doctrines are written as if the model of Christendom is in effect worldwide, making Christianity virtually the only religion in the world, with the established “mainstream” churches as the only players on the field. And, of course, Christian leaders and theologians are assumed to be mainly white, elderly men. However, the world of the third millennium in which the global church and its mission exist is radically different from what Christianity says today. There is a radical transformation—or, in the words of Cuban-American historian-theologian Justo González, a “macro-reformation”—that is taking place before our very eyes. From within the church something radically new is emerging.
