Freedom of Conscience and the Common Good:A Theological Perspective on Human Flourishing as the Foundation of Human Rights and Lasting Peace.
The article explores the relationship between freedom of conscience, the common good, and human flourishing from a theological perspective that integrates reason, hope, and love into a holistic vision. In a context where cultural and religious pluralism is redefining the public sphere, the study proposes a theological reading of freedom of conscience as a relational dynamic – not merely an individual right, but a spiritual framework for coexistence and peace. Drawing on the modernist conceptions of Carl F. H. Henry and Raymond Plant, and engaging the debates surrounding postmodernity (Cox, Preda, Smith, Rieger), the text argues that freedom of conscience, understood as an expression of the imago Dei, becomes the ethical foundation of the common good. Inspired by Jürgen Moltmann’s theology of hope, Miroslav Volf ’s public theology, and Marcel V. Măcelaru’s reflections on flourishing, the article shows that human well-being and lasting peace can be built only where freedom is lived out in love, dialogue, and mutual responsibility.
