De vita Mosis, a manifesto for acceptance and multi-religious coexistence?
De vita Mosis can be viewed as a manifesto for social and cultural acceptance, and multireligious coexistence. It remains to be analyzed whether this manifesto does justice to the Judaism of his time or not, as Philo seeks to make it acceptable in the eyes of the Greeks and Romans. In many sections of The Life of Moses, direct deviations from the Scriptures, as well as the radical interpretation of the sacred text through the allegorical method, allow Philo to read far too much Hellenism between the lines of the Hebrew text. Could it be that, in trying to demonstrate a Jewish Hellenism, Philo actually achieves the opposite—offering his readers a Hellenized Judaism from its very origins? If that is the case, then he is not proposing acceptance and integration in spite of differences, but rather the denial of differences for the sake of social and cultural acceptance and integration.
